Through the Lens: Solar Eclipse 2017

I can't help it, I love all things astronomy. Perhaps it's because it so incredible and inspiring. Maybe it's because even though I have a pretty good understanding of science, things like eclipses, blood moons and the moon in general are still magical to me. You can see my failed attempt at capturing the super blood moon of 2015: here. Regardless the reason, anytime something like this comes around - I feel a strong urge to experience the beauty of it. As we all know, Monday was the first solar eclipse in about 99 years and even though the state of Florida experienced a partial one - it was still awesome to see.

Yesterday afternoon my Mom, Alex & I met up with Megan & Justin at a downtown park to see the solar eclipse. Luckily, Megan & Justin had the special glasses, so we spent our time sharing two glasses between the five of us. It was quite humbling to see the moon eclipse the sun, and of course, awe-inspiring. Even though I wasn't able to get any really awesome photos, the ones I did get will always be special to me: a memory spent with those who mean so much to me and a simple reminder of how incredible this universe truly is.

Through the Lens: St. Augustine

I forgot to share these photos I took while Alex & I were in St. Augustine. They are photos of a solitary church that felt out of place, nestled just behind Flagler College. Maybe it was its style or the fact that it had palm trees next to it. Either way, there was something about that church that made us want to explore. And the last photo.. well, that's what the moon looked like the night Alex proposed.

Through the Lens: A Fog-Ridden French Quarter Morning

Last year I took these photos one early, foggy morning. After being in New Orleans for a few days (for the third time) I decided to walk down to Jackson Square. I felt the need to look at the cathedral from the middle of the park, to stroll across the edge of the Mississippi River as I bundled up in my coat and scarf. New Orleans was delightfully cold and fog ridden. As I stood there, looking out at the Crescent City Connection and the fragile wooden steps leading to the river, I took in the smells of what my soul knows to be New Orleans: chicory coffee and beignets.

Through the Lens: A Failed Attempt at Capturing the Super Blood Moon

Last year in October, Alex & I drove up to the highest hill in town to view the super blood moon.


We patiently waited for the fog to clear. We packed a mini late night picnic and noshed on our goodies in anticipation of the moon to turn to a glowing red. Unfortunately, the sky only got hazier as the night went on. It appeared as though Florida cancelled the event without telling anyone. I still like these photos though.

On our picnic this past Monday Alex found this blue car sticking halfway out of the ground and we thought it would be a neat idea for me to take random photos of it during our walk. Here's what we came up with, we hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Through the Lens: Whitby Cemetery, UK

It's Halloween and I thought it would be the perfect time to share some cemetery photos that I took while I was in England last year. These photos were taken in Whitby (one of my favourite places - ever). Whitby is a beautiful seaside town nestled on the upper east coast of England. Whitby made it's literary appearance in Bram Stoker's Dracula and it looks the part as well. They even have biannual goth festivals! There are 199 intimidating steps in order to get to where the cemetery and the abbey ruins are, but once you do the view is incredible. It's easy to get transported back in time while standing amongst the tombstones on the cliff, overlooking the clustered buildings of the town and listening to the sound of the crashing waves from the sea below.

I made it back home from New Orleans yesterday afternoon. Even though it is nice to be in my own lair - this morning I thought about how if I could, I would go back today, in a heart beat. There is something about that city that seeps into my bones while I am there, something that creates a sense of home within my soul that gets carried back with me. The French Quarter will always be a special place to me and even though I don't live there, I know I will always go back.
